May + verb

by freshy_cutie Sat Sep 19, 2009 6:46 am

I realized that we are not suppose to post any official verbal question here but I don't understand the explanation from one of the question in Verbal Review (purple) - SC section # 44

I was hesitated between choice B and D

The solution mentioned that choice D is wrong because "have + verb3" does not agree with the noun "the term" but I thought the sentence is:

...the term....MAY have suggested

isn't the usage of MAY similar to CAN e.g. She could have done it OR she may have done it.

Sorry but I'm really confused....

good catch. yes, in this instance, the official guide explanation is just ... totally wrong.
(this happens on occasion. it's clear that the best writers write the questions, and the, um, junior writers write the explanations. either that or they revise the questions many more times.)

the tense of that verb, though, is still wrong (the present perfect doesn't make any sense in this context).
