I think no reason at all, we can solve the problem by substituting the choices in x=3y equation. I think he gave all text to distract us.

i don't think the text is there to distract, but you are definitely meant to simplify the problem to x = 3y ultimately..

Two ways of simplifying it and reaching to X=3Y. One directly from the relationship of R with X and Y. And the other by equating the amount after one year from all the three types of investment.
Both of these will lead to same equation.
You then need the help of the answer choices to determine which one is correct.
