Last week, should I be focusing on Advanced or General Quant

by travis.thornell Sat Jul 14, 2012 9:33 am

I'm taking the GMAT in one week, planning to spend the next week doing and reviewing three practice test, as well as working on quant problems. My goal is a 650. My verbal scores are fine, but my quant over my last three MGMAT test have been 41, 35, and 39..while my one MGMAT score was a 33. If I can hit the score in the 50th + percentile, I shold reach my goal score.. Should I spend my time working on the advanced problems, or should I stick to mastering the gerneral problems? Thanks!

Whatever you're scoring right now is likely what you will score in one week on the real test.

From the numbers you gave, I can't tell how far you are from your goal, but if your practice CATs (under 100% official conditions, including essay and IR) are not already in your goal score range, then my best recommendation is to postpone the test.

I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but scores don't change that much in one week. And if you're trying to fix weaknesses during that last week, then you're not doing a comprehensive review - which is really how you need to spend the last week.

Did you mean to say "my one GMATPrep score"? Why are the scores varying so much? Why did you drop to 35 and then jump back up to 39? If you haven't fixed whatever that problem is, then you can't guarantee that it won't happen on the real thing - which is another reason to postpone.

I'm guessing that you're probably struggling with timing - most people do at least a little, and that's the most common culprit when someone's score is jumping around.

Read these and start doing what they say:

Note that, depending on the severity of timing issues, it can take a good 4 to 6 weeks to fix the problem.

If you'd like more specific recommendations, please use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s):

Then come back here and tell us the results of your analysis. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)
