Large Discrepancy in MGMAT CAT's

by benjamin.palmore Wed May 16, 2012 11:40 pm

Hello,

My goal is a 700+ score. I'm in week 6 of the program and work has caused me to miss the past 3 weeks of study. I plan on really buckling down though and doing 30-60 minutes a day with 90-120 each weekend day for the rest of the course and 1-2 months after the course is over.

My scores so far are:
Last year I started the course, but couldn't keep up due to work:
MGMAT 1 - 5/11 - 40Q/31V (580) ** Pre course no study
MGMAT 2 - 4/12 - 29Q/34V (530) ** Pre course round two
MGMAT 3 - 5/12 - 44Q/40V (700) ** Week 6

My question, how reliable is that 700? And does the above study program sound like it could produce a 700+ score?

Thanks in advance.

It's great that you got a 700 on one practice test. You need to back it up, though, by doing it again. :)

Also, did you take that test under 100% official conditions, including essays, length of breaks, no use of the pause button, etc? If you gave yourself any artificial advantages, then that coudl have resulted in an artificial score inflation. (In particular, a lot of people skip the essays, then have stamina problems on the real test. Skipping the essays makes the test an hour shorter - a substantial advantage.)

I'm also wondering why your quant score dropped so much on T2. What happened there?

Use this to analyze your most recent CATs:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... ice-tests/

That will help you to figure out how to prioritize your time, etc. You can also share that analysis here, with your teacher(s), etc, to gain more insights. (Note: share your analysis, not just the raw data. Think it through and then tell us what you think it means.)

Re: the study plan in general, my guess is that you're going to need closer to 2 months. You've missed 3 weeks of studying, so you need to do that work at some point, and you should plan for it to take 3 weeks. And then you're going to want at least 2-3 weeks of review. I can't tell you what length of time will likely lead to a certain score - it really depends upon the quality of your study, etc.

Also, have you started studying for IR yet? If you're in week 6 now, then I think you started your course before we added IR to the curriculum (though please correct me if I'm wrong).
