is x>1?

by makn Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:19 am

is x>1?

a. (x+1)(|x| -1) > 0
b. |x|<5 -- out

for a. I tried plugging the numbers, and found that for

x<0, A does not true.. OK
x>1 it works, A holds true.. OK
but for 0<x<1 also, it holds true.. NOT OK
(1/2+1)(|1/2| -1) = (3/2)(1/2) = 3/4 > 0

that means.. x>0 is fine. but we dont know whether x>1 or not....

Though, OA given is A, with some algebraic explanation...

I am missing something??
