Is triangle ABC right angled

by udit_g Fri Jul 03, 2009 4:37 am

In triangle ABC angle A is the greatest angle. D is the foot of the
perpendicular dropped on to BC from A. Is triangle ABC
right-angled?

A) AD^2 = BDxDC
B) AD/DC < BD/AD

My answer is E) as it will make these sub-traingles similar to make triangle isosceles but we can have still have 90-45-45 or 120-30-30 combination.

Both conditions are self contradictory so C cant be choice.

what is the source of this question?

there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that this is an OFFICIAL GMATPREP question.
evidence:
* the gmat will NOT use terms such as "foot of the perpendicular". (if this is your way of describing something that appears as an actual diagram on the problem itself, then please upload a screen shot of the problem next time.)
* gmat problems NEVER have contradictory statements.

at this point you have 2 options:
(1) if this problem is really from the GMATPREP SOFTWARE (which i am absolutely sure it's not), then please upload a screen shot as proof;
(2) post this problem in the GENERAL MATH FOLDER, and CITE THE SOURCE of the problem (original source - don't cite other forums, for instance).

thanks.
