What is x?

(1) |x| < 2

(2) |x| = 3x - 2

Is from CAT 1, why is the answer B?

NO!!!
Statement 1: x could be 1.5 0r -1.5 INSUFFICIENT
Statement 2: x=1 SUFFICIENT.
The correcanswer is B .

yeah.

(1) translates to -2 < x < 2. if you can't make that translation automatically, then practice your absolute value inequalities until you can.
(2) write two equations (one with the right-hand side positive, the other with it negative), solve both, and check the solutions:
--- (a) x = 3x - 2 --> x = 1. plug back in --> works!
--- (b) x = -3x + 2 --> x = 1/2. plug back in --> doesn't work!
--- so the solution is only x = 1
--- sufficient
