Is the problem solving performance weighted higher in the ov

by tomslawsky Thu Jul 16, 2009 5:03 pm

Since there are 22 problem solving questions and 15 data sufficiency questions, does that mean that problem solving performance is a higher percentage of one's overall quant score?

You can think of it that way to some extent, yes, although the scoring mechanism is complex enough that you can't actually make a direct correlation here. First, the numbers aren't exactly 22 and 15. You can have as many as 18 DS (and correspondingly fewer PS). Second, some number of questions are experimental questions, and it's not clear whether those come in the same proportion as each question type in the overall section. Third, the test is not based purely on percentage correct - difficulty level is actually the major determinant, and we could have different average difficulty levels for the two different types. Etc.
