infinitive of purpose questions

by davetzulin Fri Jan 20, 2012 2:37 am

These questions are based on reading Chapter 13 Advanced strategy.

(1). The building was demolished TO AVOID falling down accidentally [incorrect]
(2). The building was demolished TO KEEP IT from falling down accidentally [correct]

mgmat guide states that the subject of the main verb is the implied subject of the infinitive and therefore a building cannot avoid something.

Then I modified another example using the same line of thinking

(1). The stocks were not sold TO AVOID a stock market crash [?]
(2). The stocks were not sold TO KEEP them from crashing the stock market [?]

is #1 above really wrong? #2 doesn't seem to make any sense

It appears that only when the subject following the infinitive is the same as the subject of the main verb, then you have the problem?

the examples you posted are too riddled with ambiguity and meaning issues for us to have a proper discussion of them. please use examples you've found in our materials or the GMAT prep software to avoid this problem..
