In May, Xiang sold 15 used cars. For these 15 cars...

by I_need_a_700plus Sat Oct 31, 2009 11:28 pm

In May, Xiang sold 15 used cars. For these 15 cars, the range of the selling price was $15,000 and the lowest selling price was $4,500. In June, Xiang sold 10 used cars. For these 10 cars, the range of the selling prices was $16,500 and the lowest selling price was $6,100. What was the range of the selling prices of the 25 used cars sold by Xiang in May and June?

a) $15,600
b) $15,750
c) $16,820
d) $18,100
e) $19,200

The correct answer was D, $18,100. Can someone please explain this to me? Thank you!

I feel like there is something missing in this question. To find a range of something we need to list the numbers from lowest to highest. In the above question we are given low and high number of both May and June and asked what the range is for both months.

To find Range we will take $16,500 from June as the highest number and subtract $4,500 from it to get $12,000 as a range. (16,500 - 4,500 = 12,000). However $12,000 is not in the answer choices.

Can someone please help me understand if question is posted wrong or I am misinterpreting something and missing the obvious in my reasoning

First of all let us find the lowest price of the car sold in the two months period
ie may and june
since the least price of car sold in may is 4500 less than the least cost of the car sold in june which was 6100

so we have the lowest value in order to find the range=4500

consider the month of may range is given as 15,000
so 15000=max cost of car-least cost of a car
so 15000=max cost of car-4500
so max cost of car in may=19500
similarly for june max cost of car=22600

so now we have the highest price and the lowest price
so range=22600-4500=18100
