... account for 43 or 35 % of what?? We need to have a reference term (such as, "of the total population") -- therefore, eliminate a, d, and e.

Of the remaining two choices, B is awkward and has a faulty comparison.

C compares >43%/today with ~35%/a decade ago. It should be the correct answer.
