The questionable sentence is " When peanuts were in troduced to Africa by Portuuese explorers early in the sixteenth century they were quickly adopted into Africa's agriculture, probably becuase they are so similar to the Bambarra groundnut, a popular indigenous plant."
does the "when" and "in the sixteenth century" cause redundancy?

"Redundant" means you're saying exactly the same thing twice. Like "annual salary per year", or "reply back". That's not happening here.
