In a 9 week Course but afraid I might be forgetting stuff.

by michael.chion Tue Oct 05, 2010 7:35 pm

I don't know if I am or not but I have this paranoia that I am forgetting the stuff learned from previous weeks. I am currently in Week 4 of the class and keep up exactly with the Study Organizer. Some days it says that it is 3 hours worth of work but it sometimes takes me 6+ hours because I am reviewing my missed problems in depth or re-reading to make sure I absorbed everything.

Do you guys recommend anything so that I can ensure I don't forget what I learned in the previous weeks? My instructor recommended to open up the OG and do random questions. My main concern is I do not want to run out of OG problems and i do not want to do problems until I have learned the material.

Also I'm thinking since I am enrolled in the class it is more important to stay up to date with the course so I can absorb as much as possible in the upcoming weeks and be prepared for class/ office hours where most of the course's value is. I have already signed up for my first test exactly 1 month after the course ends. In this one month I hope to go over as much of the advanced sections in the Study Guides (because of time constraint and instructor recommendations I have been skipping them) and review as much as possible

Any thoughts would really help.

Thank you!

You can't remember everything - you are going to forget some stuff. That's okay.

Read this article; it talks about how to study, both to make better memories the first time around, and to incorporate review to help reinforce those memories.

http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/09/ ... your-study

The timing is a very general guideline; you should do what you feel you need to do. If you need more time to review, then take it! (Though, if you feel burned out, take a break. There's no point in studying if you're so burned out that you're not remembering what you study anyway.)

I do think it's good to do random question sets, but you can limit them only to things you've already done. For example, you're in week 4. One day a week, you can do a set of mixed problems that come from everything you've studied so far, not just the current class. Generally, I recommend starting to do that around the middle of the course.

In terms of prioritizing this with other work, the most important thing (as you note) is to be ready for the next class session, so always do that work first. If you have more time, return to material from previous weeks that you did not complete (if any). Then, do mixed sets of work from multiple previous weeks.

If you don't have much time to do mixed sets during the course, that's okay. Just plan for a little extra review time after the course is over. Generally, I think the ideal is anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks after the course ends - enough time to do a thorough review, but not so much time that you lose motivation or start to forget a lot of material.

If you are saving the advanced material for after the course, and you also don't find much time to review during the course, then I would be somewhat flexible with your test date. If it's 2 to 3 weeks after the course and you're feeling pressed for time, then consider postponing your official test (which you can do for a $50 fee if you reschedule more than 7 days in advance). If, on the other hand, you feel fine, then keep your test date.
