Improve GMAT score

by sunilrsangle Wed Oct 26, 2011 5:18 pm

Today I gave my GMAT and scored 690.
Split up (Q47/V38) (Percentil Q76/V83, overall 88)
It was really disapponting. I am looking for 99 percentile.
I am planning to give it again in next few months.

I have number of observations-
1. Difficulty level of Quant section
The questions in the quant section were much more challenging than questions in OG 12th edition and in OG Maths.
The language was dense and questions were lengthy.

I used to solve QG question (in 2 minute time limit, both DS and PS) with more 95% accuracy. (Means if I solve any 50 questions I used to get only couple of wrong answers)

Where can I get more challenging maths question to practice?

2. Verbal section
The result on verbal section was almost as expected by me. (infact slightly better) In my test prep, I used to get 2-3 wrong answers for each CR, RC and SC so total 8-9 wrong answers and score in the range of 35-40.

I really need to improve on Verbal and I tried hard during last 1 month of preparation but it seems I have hit a platue.
How to over come that?

Please help!!!

A real test is adaptive; the OG has questions ranging from very easy to very difficult. If you are a high scorer in one area, then you'll find most of the OG questions on the easier side.

Tell us more about what happened during the test. Did you have any timing problems? Any stamina or mental fatigue issues?

What kinds of scores were you getting on your practice tests? Did you take your practice tests under 100% official conditions (including essays, length of breaks, etc.)?

Have you taken an MGMAT CAT recently? If so, use the below article to analyze your results. If not, take a CAT and then analyze your results. :)

After, come back here and tell us your analysis. (Note: not just your raw notes - make sure you also tell us what you think the data means. The ability to self-assess is crucial to your ability to improve.)

Also tell us what study materials you have (including what you have and haven't used yet).

Finally, what's your goal score? A 690 is already a very good score! You mention "looking for 99th percentile) - do you mean you want a 760+? Why are you trying to get such a hugely high score? The only school that requires a score like that is... ManhattanGMAT. ;)
