If k does not equal 0, 1, or -1, is 1/k > 0?

by davidfelts Fri Apr 30, 2010 12:52 pm

1) 1/(k-1)>0
2) 1/(k+1)>0

The answer was A, statement 1 alone is sufficient. I chose D. My thought process was that for the second statement, if k does not equal 0, 1, or -1, then k must be greater than zero for the statement to be positive. Can someone explain why statement 2 is insufficient?

Thanks.

1) 1/(k-1)>0
2) 1/(k+1)>0

Statement 1:
k-1>0
k>1

1/k > 0
Sufficient

Statement 2
k+1>0
k>-1

-1<k<0 =>> 1/k < 0
0<k<1 =>> 1/k > 0
k>1 =>> 1/k > 0

Insufficient

Answer: A

try here:

i will admit that this is a very difficult problem to search (there are essentially zero keywords for you to use).
