Idiom Stratergy

by kilonline Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:16 pm

I am a non-native English speaker. Though I am fairly good with my Englsih skills, I find it really difficult to recognize idioms, and I often go wrong with them.

Idioms Stratergy in the statergy guides are presented in a way that does not help memorizing or may be I feel so. Is there any other way to have a mastery over idioms.

Thanks,
Krishna

Idioms are definitely difficult. I'm learning French right now and idioms are driving me crazy!

Idioms are basically about memorization, so you're going to have to use whatever methods you normally use when you memorize things. A lot of people use flashcards. Think back to school - what worked for you, when you had to memorize a bunch of things?

The other thing to note: there are literally thousands and thousands of idioms in the language - don't go buy a general idiom book and try to learn them all. You want to concentrate on the ones that are actually tested on the official test.

Unfortunately, they don't give us a list; we have to figure that out ourselves. The idioms listed in our SC guide are all from official test questions. If you notice others on OG or GMATPrep questions, then note those down, too. If you find idioms from non-official sources, you may want to note them down, but make them lower priority - the ones that we know have been tested by the GMAT in the past are the highest priority.
