How will I overcome GMAT Verbal??

by ehimeme Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:57 am

Hello Stacey/Ron,

I want to do the GMAT for the fourth time. I am really scared! My last three scores were not encouraging. They were 550(Q-37,V-28),590(Q-47,25) and 570(Q-47.V-22). I want to do it next year,so I have long time to really get it right. The GMAT verbal has always been my problem especially RC and CR in that order. I have all your materials-8 books. I have OG 11th edition,OG verbal guide and math guide. I also have KAPLAN.

How can I be very good in English and allso overcome the verbal of the GMAT. i want to score atleast 730.

Thanks

Your quant score is very good, so that's good news. In order to reach 730, if your quant score stays at 47, you'd pretty much need a 99th percentile score on the verbal, so you should assume that you are going to have to improve quant as well - it's not reasonable to assume that you'll improve verbal all the way to the highest score without doing anything about quant.

You don't mention whether you want to study on your own, take a class, or work with a tutor. Because you have taken it three times already (and, I'm assuming, studied on your own during those times), you may want to think about some outside help this time in the form of a class or tutor.

This article can help you to think about the pros and cons of self-study, a class, and a tutor:
http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/06/ ... s-or-tutor

That's your first step. If you choose a class or tutor, then your teacher will set your syllabus for you and tell you what to do. If you choose to study on your own, then you will have to create your own syllabus, which we can help you to do.

If you choose to study on your own, then do these two things:

1) read this article and do what it describes: http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/02/ ... study-plan

2) post your analysis of your practice test (as described in this article) here in the forums:

Hello Stacey,

Thanks for your feedback. I am very grateful! I just want to clarify something. On the pratice test, do you mean I should do one CAT and do the analysis myself or I should do a CAT and you guys will help me do the analysis???

Thanks

I took one of the classes given and then took as many practice tests as I could. You just kind of get into a rhythm after awhile. From my first practice test to my actual score on my first exam, I was able to go up over 200 points. I plan to take it again after some more practice.

Don't sweat it, you will do fine -

You do the analysis yourself, using that article. Then, you come back here and post the results of your analysis (the different things that fall into the different buckets described in the article).

Then we will help you figure out what to do with your analysis. :)
