How to read SC questions?

by dippradhan Wed Mar 02, 2011 9:48 pm

Stracey,
Thanks for wonderful article on how to read SC problem.
http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/06/ ... on-problem

Could you please help me by answering below quesitons?
(1) Shall I try to understand the meaning of the sentence when I read for the first time ? I do try to find the subject and veb in the original sentence.

(2) If I spot an error in original sentence, shall I eliminate the answers with same error and read rest of the sentence from an answer choice instead of reading it from original sentence ?
Why I do this? -- it is better looking for error in a potential answer choice rather than trying to find second error in a wrong answer choice.

(1) Within reason, yes. Try to understand the main point - the subject and the verb - at least. If you can understand more than that, great. If the sentence is very difficult and you're struggling to understand other parts, then just focus on the core (subjects and verbs) first, and worry about the other parts later.

(2) Yes, if you spot an error in the original, cross off A and also cross off any other answers that repeat that same error. Just immediately go look at BCDE in the same location and cross off any that repeat the error - don't bother to read the entire text of choices BCDE.

You should, though, read the entire original sentence - even if you stop to cross off an error. Still go back and finish reading the original sentence. You need to understand the full context, including the stuff that isn't underlined, and you may also happen to see a second error in the original that you could then use to eliminate other answers!
