Hints Timing

by luc2r4 Wed Jul 28, 2010 3:33 am

I would like to know if there are special tips for improving reading comprehension score. I find out that I spend too much time reading the paragraph (my approach is to read the whole paragraph and then to solve in a row all questions). So , when I face the question it turns out confusing since I remember too many details . Also, sometimes i overlook the texts when i face words i do not know. Do you believe I should improve my reading speed and vocabulary ?? Is there a shortcut for it ???
Do you know any elimination strategy that I could use if i run out of time ???

I am concern that my timing is not good at verbal section because of my 270 wpm-reading speed level. I am afraid this may hamper my score of every type of verbal question.

Should I continue to study for content or to improve my reading skills first of all ?? Thanks

You can do multiple things to improve RC.

These two articles will help with the actual reading speed and level of detail:
http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/04/ ... mp-passage
http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/07/ ... rc-passage

You can also do some general reading for 15-30 minutes every day on non-GMAT topics, just to improve your ability to read and comprehend relatively quickly. Try these sources:

http://magazine.uchicago.edu/ - particularly articles in the "Investigations" tab
http://harvardmagazine.com/
http://sciam.com/ (This can get a bit too casual for the GMAT, but it's worth including if you really don't like the science passages on the GMAT.)

In terms of things like elimination strategies, yes - but they depend upon the specific type of question. Are you using our RC book? That book discusses various "wrong answer types" for the different kinds of RC question types. (I don't have an article for that topic - it's just in the book.)
