Help!

by schiel.andrew Mon Sep 14, 2009 11:07 pm

I just took the GMAT today and scored a 700 (87% Q, 73% V). I'm a little frustrated by this score considering I took 4 practice tests and didn't score below a 94% in the Verbal. Anyway, I'm wondering if I should take the GMAT again....

Will a 700 be good enough for an application to top schools? I graduated from a top liberal arts college, but I have a colorful resume with work experience in a variety of different occupations within the entertainment industry. I want to go to business school b/c I am looking to change my life and further my education. Will I be able to get into a good school with these qualifications?

Would love some feedback- am pretty stressed out about all of this.

700 is a great score, though I understand your frustration with the verbal. So, a couple of things:

1) You don't mention where you want to go. Some of the very top schools want to see what they call 80/80, which is at least an 80th percentile in each of the two sections. If someone is in the high 70s, that's often considered close enough. You're 73, which means you might be a little bit borderline on that data point. I'll mention that this 80/80 thing is NOT a hard-and-fast rule; they won't automatically reject you because of it. But it might make them think twice.

Go to the Admissions Consulting thread, explain your situation (including the schools to which you plan to apply) and ask them whether those schools use the 80/80 rule.

2) Some questions for you. Did you do the essays on your practice tests? Did you take the practice tests under official timing conditions, including breaks? Did you take them at the same time of day as your real test? (Any of these things could cause your verbal score to drop - basically, if your brain and body weren't prepared for the stamina aspect of this test, then your performance during the last section can easily drop.)

Finally, were you in one of our courses? If you did take the course, then you're eligible for a free Post-Exam Assessment. This is a phone call with an instructor to figure out what went wrong and come up with a plan to re-take the test. If this applies to you, please send an email to studentservices@manhattangmat.com and request the Post-Exam Assessment.
