by Aquamarine Thu Sep 06, 2012 12:11 am

Which statement is correct and if both are correct what would they each mean ?

1. The doctor told me I had had a heart attack.

2. The doctor told me I have had a heart attack.

Thanks !

both are correct - kind of. "had had" means your heart attack occurred before something else you and the doctor discussed. since we don't know of this prior event from the context, this would technically be an incorrect GMAT sentence, but if used with additional context it would be fine. "have had" means you had the heart attack recently and are likely still feeling the effects of it..
