GMATPrep Question Pack 1 vs GMAT Focus

by thewonk Sun Jul 29, 2012 1:44 am

I'm debating between buying GMATPrep® Question Pack 1 and GMAT Focus. I have 10 days to go before I take my GMAT, and have exhausted the other materials. Will be taking the GMATPrep full-length tests during this time as well.

Perspectives / advice appreciated.

Piece of advice #1: don't overdo it.

Practice CATs are really good for (a) figuring out where you're scoring right now, (b) practicing stamina, and (c) analyzing your strengths and weaknesses. The actual act of just taking the exam is NOT so useful for improving. It's what you do with the test results / between tests that helps you to improve.

So if your score is already about what you want it to be, and you're using all these practice sets and CATs just to get practice in and do comprehensive review, or to try to work out some problems in timing etc, that's fine. But if you think this is how you're going to improve your score a lot - then this isn't how to go about it.

The last 7-10 days, expect your test score to be pretty much what it is right now (on practice CATs taken under 100% official conditions). If you don't like that score, then postpone your test.

Okay, next - both products are good products. If you are trying to simulate testing conditions, GMAT Focus is better - this product is adaptive. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a big pool of questions from which to study in general, then Prep Pack 1 is better.

Given that you're 10 days out, I'd say GMAT Focus is better, because at this point you should just be practicing sets of questions in as close to test conditions as possible (though not necessarily 37 questions - shorter sets are fine... actually better much of the time).
