GMAT study time

by Fmahmud84 Tue Jul 19, 2011 2:15 pm

Hello,

New to the forums, and picked up the 8 4th Edition strategy guides. I'm very excited to undergo this studying process, though I know at times (probably most) it will be quite challenging. That being said, I am facing my first challenge: Time.

I do work in NYC, but I commute from my house to the city. My commute time is nearly 1.5hrs each way, starting with a 7am train in the morning. I do like to get a quick workout in the am, which helps me stay awake and alert while at work. I usually get home from 7-8pm, and unfortunately, I'm exhausted. Obviously, I will be able to devote most of my studying time on the weekends, but was wondering if even an hour a day, Mon-Fri. would be enough? I don't have an official test date, but I was thinking sometime next winter (2012), so I can be in B-school by next Fall.

Can anyone suggest a good amount of time allocated per weekday/weeknight? I know this question will have various answers as everyone studies differently. I plan on taking my first practice exam this weekend, though I have started reading through the 'Numbers Property' guide. :)

Thank you.

Can you study on the train? An hour a day on working days is great - much better to do a little every day than to do nothing for 5 days and try to cram it all into 2 days. You'll learn more efficiently if you spread it out. :)

You mentioned taking the test in the winter of 2012 and starting school in the fall of 2012. Are you planning to apply to part-time programs or to programs outside of the US? Most full-time US schools have application deadlines starting in October and extending through January, possibly February. If you haven't looked into the application process much yet, you may want to do so.
