GMAT Sets

by Huest Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:11 pm

I have questions regardong scoretop controversy:
Are MJJ and VJJ same as GMAT set?
I got the following reply in one of the forum:

The GMAT Sets are technically illegal - they re-use copyrighted test questions from the old paper and pencil tests without permission from the copyright owners. Better to study from OG (1400 questions combined in the 3 current books!) because they are more recent. The paper and pencil test questions are more than 10 years old (the last time the test was given in that format was 1997).

Please respond. I posted some doubts from GMAT sets on Scoretop but never saw JJ. I was VIP member from April 08 to 10 May 08.

Did you get the GMAT Sets directly from the money you paid for VIP service?

No. When I joined scoretop, GMAT sets were no longer available there. I downloaded from some other website.
Anyone know what is the difference between PQ (practice questions) and JJs?
Were JJs posted in the scoretop forum or they were available as a file. When I joined I learned that JJs were stopped in 2007.
Any response is highly appreciated.

Thanks

People say that the questions seen in OG 11 are the closest you can get to "real questions" and they're LEGAL. Why even risk it by writing on this forum? There are no shortcuts. Get it done!!!!

I don't know, unfortunately. I don't know what any of those acronyms mean (MJJ, VJJ, PQ). Sounds like they are what scoretop used to refer to various question sets? If so, I don't know where the questions came from. Sorry. :(

If you're worried about whether those might have been "live" questions which would put you in jeopardy - if you really don't know yourself what those questions represented, then it's highly unlikely that you can get into legal trouble because there will be no proof (eg, your conversations on the forums) that indicated that you knew what you were using. (And maybe those things weren't even the "live" questions - as I said, I have no idea what they are.)

And I do agree that OG is the way to go - good questions, legal questions, and many questions. If you're studying correctly, the 1,400 questions contained in the three current official guide books are plenty (along with GMATPrep, and maybe GMAT Focus).

GMAT SETS ARE NOT THE JJ SETS. The GMAT Sets apparently only contain retired questions that are available in the books etc. that GMAC sells. You can read all about it by reading their official legal complaint

Are the JJ sets the ones that contained live questions or something?

I know the 1,000 sets contain questions from already-published sources (OG, paper and pencil tests), so there isn't an issue of cheating with those. There is the issue of stealing though - those questions have been released, but they have not been released for free. They are under copyright and sold in various forms (eg, the OG books). I highly doubt they'll come after anybody for that - it's just too hard and too many people are using the material. But, ethically, using the sets means you're using information for free that you should be paying to use.

The GMAC complaint says that JJ's are the files you received when paying for a VIP package. The JJ sets are the ones that contained live questions.

According to my knowledge, GMAT sets are available from 1997. They do not contain live questions and extensively used by private GMAT tutors all over in USA.

They do not contain live questions, but they do contain questions that belong to GMAC - copyrighted questions that they currently sell via old paper and pencil tests. GMAC has NOT given permission for those questions to be distributed for free over the Internet. It would be like someone scanning one of our books and just passing it around to everyone for free - illegal copy and distribution.

GMATPrep is given away for free, so it's okay to post those questions online and share them. OG and paper and pencil tests are NOT given away for free, so if you find them online for free, someone is distributing them illegally.
