by preeti.shukla81 Fri Nov 19, 2010 10:29 am

Hi there
I just appeared for Gmat and scored a 630(V30,Q47).In gmatpreps and mgmat ,never scored below 670-680.
Gmat prep1-720(Q49,V38)
Mgmat 1-640
Mgmat 2-670
Mgmat 3-700
Mgmat 4-700
Gmatprep 2-680(Q48,V35)
Mgmat 5-670(Q46,V35)
Looks like my verbal was slowly decreasing and trend continued til final Gmat.I have been taking all tests in test enviroment complete 3.5 hr stretch.I am planning to retake Gmat but not sure how to improve.Looks like CR and RC might have gone wrong in real Gmat.Pls Help.I am targetting a 700 score.

Good news and bad news. Bad news first: standardized tests have standard deviations, and the standard deviation for our practice test is about 50 points. The standard deviation for GMATPrep hasn't officially been published, but the SD on the real test is about 30 points, so expect GMATPrep to be about the same or a bit higher.

I agree with your assessment that verbal looks like the problem - your quant score was consistent with your practice test scores.

The good news (really - keep reading): your verbal score represents a drop of about 20 percentile points, which is significant - that isn't so much within the expected deviation. That means it's more likely something went wrong on the official test and, if we can figure out what that was, then we have a shot at fixing it!

Read this article and do the analysis described:
http://www.beatthegmat.com/a/2009/10/26 ... went-wrong

Then come back here to post again and we'll help you figure out what to do with the info.

I would also recommend that you do the analysis described in this article and post here about it; use your most recent practice test (if it was taken under non-official conditions, include that info in your write-up):

You mention a specific concern with RC and CR. Is that because of how you felt about those questions on test day, or because you knew they were your weaknesses going into the test? Elaborate a bit on that statement.

Finally, here are a couple of things to get started with, assuming that you're correct in your assessment that RC and CR were problematic. We'll start with RC:
