GMAT Prep Question

by raviram1980 Thu Apr 26, 2012 5:14 pm

Hi

Could some explain this question

If M>0 and N>0, is M+X/N+X > M/N ?

1) M<N
2) X>0

We cannot cross multiply without changing the sign of the inequality unless we know the sign of the variable? Based on this could we simplify the given expression?

Thanks

I will try my best.

The problem is actually testing the proper/improper fraction concept. Inequality is just to confuse people.

I will go with C.

My reasoning : if M<N then it is a proper fraction and when you add a positive constant to both numerator and denominator of proper fraction, its value increases. So the first one states that its a proper fraction while the second one suggest it is an addition (+ve constant).

Thanks I understand your explanation.

But still I have this question

We cannot cross multiply without changing the sign of the inequality unless we know the sign of the variable?

And if there was another question involving inequality and variable is this something to keep in mind.

Thanks

Yes, definately. We do not know the sign of variable. So we need to be careful. Similar caution needs to be taken during absolute values and during even powers.

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines before posting.

This folder is only for general strategy questions, not content or specific test problems. Check out the content / problem folders and post in the relevant folder depending upon the source of the problem you want to post (and make sure to follow the rules about banned sources). If you are a course student, you can also ask about other problems or issues before or after class.

Also FYI - you probably didn't get an immediate reply from a fellow student because this was posted in the wrong folder. People are in this folder looking for advice themselves, not looking for problems to discuss.

And finally FYI - it typically takes 3-5 business days, often longer, to get a reply from an instructor, and we specifically answer the oldest posts first based upon the date of the LAST / most recent post in the thread. If you "bump" your own post (reply to it asking for help again), you then put yourself later in the line to get an answer from an instructor. (This info is all in the forum guidelines - it's a good idea to look through them.)
