GMAT Prep 760 next day MGMAT 1 620

by j.vishal Sat Jul 04, 2009 9:36 pm

Hi,

On 4th July, I gave the repeat GMAT Prep 1 test and I scored 760 (Q50, V42). I gave 1st GMAT Prep on June 28 and scored 700 (Q 49, V 35).

When I gave my 1st MGMAT test, I scored 620 (Q43, V32).

One of the issue I face during Verbal Section, due to some issue, at around question 19-20, the screen hanged for about 2 minutes, I clicked on the back button of the browser and it immidiately took me back to test but there was some disruption, and after that test continued. Finally in the score report, I found only 40 question answered. So it seems, I missed one question when I clicked on the back button.

My first question:
1. Whether there was any impact due to this on the score in Verbal. If yes, then what should have been my final score.
2. What should be done if I come across similar issue during future tests.
3. The huge discripency in GMat Prep and MGMAT results. After analyzing the MGMAT questions, I was able to do myself, 80% of the worng question, with out looking at the explanations. In each of them, there was some silly mistake, calculation mistake etc. Any suggestion, how I can avoid this kind of mistakes.

Thanks in Advance.

On your first two questions, please send an email to tech support (techsupport@manhattangmat.com) and ask them. Give them whatever details you can (the date it happened, your full name so they can look up the test, etc). (I wish I could help you on this myself, but I can't access / deal with technical errors!)

When did you take the MGMAT test vs. the other tests? On your repeated GMATPrep test, did you see some questions you'd already seen before?

Did you do the essays for all three and take them under official testing conditions? Did you take them all at the same time of day?

Re: careless mistakes, we all do (and always will) make them, but there are things you can do to minimize them. The key is understanding exactly WHY you made a particular careless mistake. So go back over those mistakes again and ask yourself not just WHAT mistakes you made but WHY you made them. Then do whatever you have to do to minimize the chances of making that same careless mistake in future. This might involve doing some drilling / memorizing, or writing things out in a different way on your scratch paper, or checking your answers more carefully, etc.

Thanks Stacey, I will send the mail as mentioned by you.

I saw 3-4 questions in each section that were repeat in GMATPrep. But I gave this test without going through OG. I just studied, the GMAT Verbal Review and GMAT Quantitative Review. Now when I am going through OG 12, I can find out several question, I got on the test are given in OG as well (Specially in Quantitative section and CR). So I can assume, that if I would have done OG before attempting the GMATPrep, I would have seen similar number of questions from OG.

Thanks for your tips. I am going through each question in detail and I am able to pinpoint some of my weaknesses. I am working on them.

Ok - just remember that you can still take both GMATPrep and MGMAT CATs as long as you follow a few guidelines to minimize the chance of artificially inflating your score via question repeats. First, anytime you see a problem that you remember (and this means: I know the answer or I'm pretty sure I remember the answer, not just "hmm, this looks familiar..."), immediately look at the timer and make yourself sit there for the full length of time for that question type. This way, you don't artificially give yourself more time than you should have (and that's a HUGE advantage on this test!). Second, think about whether you got this problem right the last time. If you did, get it right again this time. If you didn't, get it wrong again. If you *completely honestly* think that you would get it right this time around if it were a new question (even though you got it wrong last time) because you've studied that area and improved, then get it right this time.

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for your response. I gave the test again. I faced 2 problems.

1. Even though, I am doing pretty decent on the timings specially in verbal (as per the report) except couple of CR where I spent 3-3.5 minutes. They were compensated by others where I sent lesser time, I felt too much time crunch. So this time, i added the time spent on each question and the total time was around 68 minutes on both the sections. ( I check couple of times to ensure it is correct). I selected 75 minutes in the begining. Please confirm if it is a designed behavior or some issues with the report or some issue with the network.

2. Frequent hangs and Page not found errors. I check other websites they were working fine. So apparantly, there was no issue with the connection from my side. It breaks the rythem and I have to go to the main page again to resume the test every time.

I have sent a mail to the support team. In the mean time, if you can respond, that would be great

Thanks

I assume you're talking about talking an MGMAT test, right? Unfortunately, I'm not on the tech / IT side of things, so I can't help you with that or even tell you what was going on.

On your first item, I'm not quite sure what you're saying. Are you saying you think you only spent 68 minutes but the test still somehow said you ran out of time? (If so, I suspect that has something to do with what you said in your second item - your technical problems - but you'll have to ask tech support to know for sure.)

Or are you just saying that you felt like you needed to move faster because you were worried about the time, but they it turned out that you'd only spent 68 minutes? If so, this is sometimes a consequence of making yourself aware of the time - you then actually end up going too fast. It will take some practice to balance this out so that you're spending enough time but not too much time.
