GMAT PREP 2 DS Coats

by Viswanathan.harsha Sat Jul 03, 2010 6:40 pm

A store purchased 20 coats that each cost an equal amount and then sold each of the 20 coats at an equal price. What was the store's gross profit on the 20 coats?

1) If the selling price per coat had been twice as much, the store's gross profit on thr 20 coats would have been $2,400

2) If the selling price per coat had been $2 more, the store's gross profit on the 20 coats would have been $440

Ron, can you please help with me a explanation on this question.

Let Cost price per coat is C , and Selling price per coat is S.

Questions asks us whether we can find the value of
20.(S-C).

St. 1

(2S - C). 20 = 2400.

we can't get (S-C).20 from here.

Not sufficient.

St. 2

[(S+2) - C]. 20 = 2400.

(S-C).20 + 40 = 2400

Value of (S-C).20 is known.

So St. 2 is sufficient

(B) is the answer
