GMAT HELP.!!!!

by anujnjain Wed Mar 09, 2011 2:09 am

Hi all,
This my first post on the forum and probably an interesting one.
I seek help from experts and the instructors.

I gave my GMAT attempt this Friday and landed on a score of 530 (M 39, V 25).

Now this was very disheartening for me as in all my MGMAT cat’s I have score 620-660. In the GMAT prep my scores were 660 and 640.

Gmat prep 1: 660 (Q47, V 34)
Gmat prep 1: 640 (Q47, V 32)
Mgmat: 660 (Q 46, V 36)

other mgmat in the same range

In actual gmat, timing was an issue in Quants section. However, in verbal section I was pretty much comfortable and was expecting a score of 33+

I am unable to understand how could there be so much of difference in real gmat and Mocks (including GMAT prep)

Also, I have given GMAT earlier (about 8 months ago and scored 640 (M47, V 31)). After which I decided to go in my more planned way and practised the concept guides of MGMAT, question banks and adaptive tests to have a score of 700+
Now I intend to take the attempt once again so wanted to check on with you all of how to proceed on the same. Pls advise

Also I intend to give the next attempt in about a month due to work committments. Pls advise how could I can make my next attempt the best one

Thanks

The first thing to do is figure out why your score dropped so much. This article can help:

http://www.beatthegmat.com/a/2009/10/26 ... went-wrong

You mention an "earlier" GMAT score of 640 - was that the official test? Just not sure from the way you wrote about it.

When you took practice tests, did you take them under 100% official conditions, including the essays?

After you've read the above article, come back here and tell us what you think you figured out. Once we can pinpoint what probably happened, then we can brainstorm some strategies for your retake.

You mentioned that your goal was 700+. Your recent practice tests were in the 640 to 660 range - so you weren't actually ready to hit 700+ when you went in to the take the test. Is your goal still 700+? If so, it's very possible that you will need more time than one month - we need to fix whatever problems caused your score to drop from the ~650 range, plus we need to lift your score that final 50 points. Those are two separate things and it would be tough to accomplish both in a month.

You mentioned that timing was an issue in the quant section of the official test. Can you elaborate? As much detail as you remember (though don't give details of actual test problems - just detail on what kinds of difficulties you had with the timing).

Finally, in terms of getting better, do the analysis described in the below article on your most recent MGMAT practice test (note: if that test deviated more than a little from official testing conditions, then take a new test under 100% official testing conditions):

http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/e ... -part1.cfm

Then come back here and share the results of your analysis. (Note: to make this easier, do the analysis with the My Score Dropped! article first and post about that issue alone. Then do a separate, second post analyzing your MGMAT test.)
