GMAT Geometry questions

by goelmohit2002 Sun Sep 06, 2009 1:49 am

(Posting in both Maths and general strategy thread)

Hi All,

I take a long time in solving geometry questions specially tricky DS ones....guess I do not have much practice in that area....can someone please tell is there a collection of good GMAT related geometry problems (especially tough ones) that can hone up my skills for GMAT preparation ?

Hola,

I guess you are in the boat that I was in the past. Trust me just do the Manhattan Geo prblms and just work on the extra ones that you get over the net from the purchase of the book.

By the EOD, you would be more confident than what you are at present. If you have already done with it, do it again and get a 100% on the practise prblms.

Hope this helps you....I learnt it the hard way...

Geometry has not been as heavily emphasized lately (compared to Number Properties and Algebra, for example), so take that into account as you decide how to spend your study time.

In general, if you struggle with certain kinds of problems, the best approach is not necessarily to start doing a bunch of new problems of that type. It's better, first, to collect the ones that you've already done and start to study - really analyze - what was going on with those problems. Of course, you need to study the solution method / how to get to the right answer, but you should also study WHY you struggled with the problem. Was it mostly about your technical skills - was there material you didn't know well enough? Or was it more about recognizing what to do or figuring out the best solution method? (You mention in particular that you struggle with "tricky DS questions," so I'm guessing you feel you know the material but the DS questions are worded in a way that makes it difficult for you to see what's really being tested or what to do in order to evaluate the statements given in the problem.

If that's the case, what you need to study from those problems is:
1) now that I've tried the problem and read the solution, what is the best 2-minute approach to solve this? (may need to break this down piece by piece)
2) (for each piece) how should I have known that this is what I needed to do in order to solve? What words or other information should be my clue in future that a certain approach is needed?
3) what shortcuts exist in this problem? how will I recognize similar shortcuts in similar problems in the future?

Once you actually break things down and understand how to recognize what to do, then you can start testing yourself on new problems.

If you've already used up the problems from our geometry book (including the online set), then you can also look for more problems in the Official Guide books - the OG 12th edition and the Quantitative Review 2nd edition are the two latest quant books. (You can also go back to earlier books - OG 11th or 10th edition, QR 1st edition - if you've already done the latest ones.)
