GMAT - English

by ram.eecha Mon Apr 29, 2013 11:42 am

I specifically mention "English". I'm a non-native English speaker, What I feel uncomfortable is I can't get the gist of some 600-700 level and all 700-800 level questions in both quants and verbal section.

I know I'm unveiling GMAT question structure but I'm just looking for some help.

Please let me know, If there are any materials or books which teach more about English usage in GMAT quant/verbal section or the infrastructure of language in GMAT questions. So I could read and get custom to it.

To add : How to develop reading-between-the-lines skill :)

Good question. We do publish a Foundations of GMAT Verbal book that will actually also help you with the language of story problems on math. We also publish a Foundations of Math book that will help if you don't know all of the math terminology, etc.

If you did not go to school at an English-speaking university, then you will probably be required to take the TOEFL (test of english as a foreign language) - have you taken it yet? If not, then I would recommend studying for that first. That will help you develop the skills that you're talking about and you'll be better prepared to tackle the GMAT at that point.

You will likely need more time for your preparation because you'll need to develop skills that native speakers have been practicing for years. Good luck - I really admire anyone taking this test when English is not the native language. I can't imagine taking a test like this in French (the language I'm learning)!
