furthest vs farthest

by ooisuankim Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:23 pm

(1) For GMAT usage, what is the difference between the superlative "furthest" and "farthest"?

(2) How do I construct sentences using "furthest" and "farthest"?

Advice and views from any of the instructors are greatly appreciated.

What i understand further is used for time as"moving further we will be using X",farther is used for distance "as we moved farther we found the house"

Farther/farthest is used to describe PHYSICAL distance:

I live farther from school than you do.
Among his ten friends, he lives the farthest away from school.

Further/furthest is used to describe a greater degree.

The detective announced that he needs to study the evidence further to solve the mystery.
According to the original schedule, the project should be further along.
