First CAT taken today....couple questions

by jeffboaz Thu Jun 18, 2009 7:24 pm

TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 43 70 %
Verbal 29 56 %
Total 590 67 %

My score looks to be slightly above average, I think this is a good starting point

I start my online course this Sunday, What's the average increase in score for a 9 week course? Where should I expect to be at the end? I'm just looking for an estimate based on your experience.

Thx
Jeff

We actually don't keep stats on score increases. In order to have something that is statistically accurate / relevant, you'd have to measure from an official test taken before the course to an offical test taken after the course (controlled conditions). Because most people don't take the test before taking our course, we literally don't have the data available. I can tell you that the average score for our students on the official test is about 670 to 680. (That's for students who actually complete the whole course.) But...

The biggest factor in your score (and score improvement) is going to be you - how much time you put in, how well you study, how seriously you take this, etc. So just keep that in mind. :)

If you haven't studied much (or at all!), then you're in a great position to start. You don't mention what you'd like to score on the official test. Just speaking based on my own experiences with my students (no official data here!), I think it's reasonable, from your starting point, to expect to get at least to 650 and possibly 700 (again, depending upon both how much time you put in and the quality of the work that you do).

Hey Stacey,

I'm looking to score a 700. I might be the only person that doesn't want to goto Harvard/S/W :)

As an engineer, I use to be pretty decent at Math (even though I missed some easy probability questions on the exam!) I'm hoping the online course will help me refresh on some basics I have forgotten (like the volume of a sphere and other worthless stuff you never use :). My main concern is sentence correction, I've never been a big Verbal buff.

Thanks for your advice..
