Exponents + Addition - Help!

I knew that it wasn't e because when you add up 2^3 and 2^4 it does NOT equal 2^7. However, I have no clue how else to approach this problem.

Are there rules for adding exponents with the same base? I know the ones for multiplication & division.

Memorize powers till (2) ^10 and add the stuff. It'll come (2)^9.
2+2+4+8+16+32+64+128+256 =512, which is (2)^9.
