Experts: How do I bring score from 750 to an 800

by ConAzer1 Sat Nov 14, 2009 7:10 pm

Hi everyone,

Right now I am averaging around a 750 GMAT score. My last 4 test scores were: 720, 750, 740, 760.

I'm no expert on how to raise your score up to your desired 800, but I would recommend that you not take the test again. Harvard Business School's website states that approximately 50% of accepted applicants scored between 700-750. If you read through the websites of the top five schools you're targeting, you'll find that admissions boards take a more comprehensive perspective. If you're concerned that a 750 will keep you from getting into one of your top schools, it might be helpful to take a step back and examine the strength of other aspects of your application (work experience, community service, etc).

An 800 will not get you into any school - they don't admit based upon GMAT score. If you score 750 or 800, the two will be treated equally as far as the admissions committees are concerned.

nadair offers valuable advice: if you're concerned about your chances for admission, the place to focus is NOT on raising the GMAT from 750 to 800 - the place to focus is on the rest of your application. Take the time that you would have spent trying to increase your score and spend that time instead on things that can actually make a difference to your application. (Can you get a promotion at work? Can you show initiative and especially impress your boss so that s/he remembers it when it comes time to write your recommendation? Can you take on extra responsibilities with some volunteer or community service that you do? Do your application essays need more work? Etc.)
