Even if vs. even though

by sonu_gmat Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:04 am

Can you please explain diff b/w 'even if' and 'even though' application wise. I know in case of uncertainity or unreal situation we use 'even if'. But still getting few wrongs. Can you please explain the follwing eg. or you can come up with better ones.

X requires huge amount of money even if it is by no means certain that investing huge amount of money will produce X
X requires huge amount of money even though it is by no means certain that investing huge amount of money produces X

Which one should be the correct?

Thanks in advance.

There is an important difference between these two words:

"if" implies a conditional or hypothetical.
"though" provides a contrast to something else that is true.

Other examples:
"Even though the dog ate the food, it was not satisfied."
"Even if the dog ate the food, it would not be satisfied."

Notice that in the first version, the dog really did eat the food, but was not satisfied.
In the second version we discuss the hypothetical situation of the dog eating the food, but not being satisfied.
