Each of the shirts are / is ?

Each of the shirts are / is ?

Hi,

I'm confused on whether we should use singular or plural for sentences that begin with the construction "each / every of the (noun)"

Each of the shirts ARE dirty [OR] Each of the shirts IS dirty

Is there a rule for each / every that says it's always singular or always plural? I remember that the rule is a little counterintuitive, so I think Each of the shirts ARE dirty is right, but not sure...

It Should be "each of the shirt is dirty" because the verb should agree with subject in number and person.Here, in this case the subject is each of the shirt which is singular . So it should be is instead of are...

"Each" and "every" are singular. Guest, you're right but you're missing an 's' at the end of 'shirts.'

Each of the shirts is dirty.
