Why is double what it was better than double the figure? thanks.
ex. In 1956 there were 57 thefts in springfield, double what it was in 1955.
ex. In 1956 there were 57 thefts in springfield, double the figure for 1955.

It's not. Where are you getting this from? There is no antecedent for the "it" in your first example sentence.
