by parveenjain Wed Apr 21, 2010 12:34 pm

I just wanted to know if there is any difference between has been/had been and present perect/past perfect tenses ?
From Manhattan Sentence correction I had understood fairy well the usage of presnt perfect and past perfect.but I sometime confuse myself with the usage of has been/had been ? are these the same things as present perfect/past perfect tenses?

True, they are present perfect and past perfect tenses. has is present , had is past. Been is an irregular verb of base form 'be'. past 'was/were'. past participle 'been'

So has been - Present perfect and had been - past perfect tense.

Present perfect means the action started in the past and completed in present. Note the action is completed , if its still ongoing it wud be present perfect continuous tense.

Similarly. past perfect (had been) is the action started before particular time in the past and completed at that time. We use when we talk about two events in the past, one is simple past and another past participle to denote that action has completed.

I'm very bad with examples u can use this as cheat sheet in sentences u encounter
