Difference b/w MBA and MS in finance

by sushma.jainr Wed Dec 02, 2009 8:05 pm

Hi,

Can anyone sum up whats the major differences b/w an MBA & MS both specializing in finance. Is their any added value to do Ms in finance after having an MBA(Finance) degree. What is the scope of having both degrees.

Thanks

Master in Business administration focuses on a more holistic approach - a little bit of finance, a little bit of marketing, a little bit of accounting, ALOT of what you choose to concentrate it. MBA programs generally last 2 years but depending on where you apply you will get shorter programs as well. The MBA's goal is to give you a solid grasp and understanding in various areas of business economics, accounting, finance, statistics, strategy, and so on. And Master science in finance focuses solely on the finance discipline by taking different approaches to it. MSF programs generally last 1 year. The MSF's goal is to prepare you and give you a solid understanding of various areas of Finance such as corporate finance, Valuations, Financial markets, etc. So essentially if you choose to specialize in Finance in an MBA you will have all other types of knowledge which will be adding value to your main specialization. In an MSF you will be focusing primarily on the finance aspect and adding value perhaps by doing some economics, accounting, but no marketing.

And because of this holistic approach we understand easily that exactly where we get fitted. It is good when you are in a state of confusion in choosing your specialization.

In the both studies not a huge difference according to me. M.S is more researchable degree which is fully focused on finance. On the other hand, MBA is general management degree with much focus on finance rather then M.S..So I suggest M.S which have more scope rather then MBA....

The Master in Finance (MSF) program is shorter in duration and strictly focuses on increasing a student’s understanding of finance and financial markets. The MBA curriculum is more diverse and covers aspects of Operations, Marketing and Human and Organizational Performance that will not be dealt with in the MSF curriculum.

The MS finance focus on higher level finance courses and the many variations of the finance function: mergers and acquisitions, Initial public offerings, leveraged buyouts, investment banking, etc.

The MBA is a general business degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. Which helps to built your career as well as helps you in your future when you go for job seeking. I know one of the best MBA Colleges in Mumbai . Institute for Future Education Entrepreneurship and Leadership - iFEEl - has various specialization such as ifeel offer 2 year full time AICTE PGDM Course as well as 100% placement assistance which help to career growth .
