Data Sufficiency: basic doubt

by sumageethika Sat Aug 07, 2010 4:12 am

Hi, I have a basic doubt in the DS section. Can I select Option (D), i.e. the question can be answered independently by using either A or B, when the options result in entirely different answers?

Example1:
If x is an integer, is x even?
1. x=2
2. x=5

Example2:
If x is an integer, is x >0?
1. x>2
2. x<-2

That will never happen unless you have made a mistake. The two statements will never contradict each other (at least, not on official questions!).

You could have some overlap: x=2 and x>0. But the two together won't tell you a range or possibilities that cannot result in at least one overlapping number (eg, you can't have the two examples you gave above).
