'DATA' and 'MEDIA' are plural on the GMAT exam, correct?

by piccolino Wed Jan 05, 2011 12:02 am

I want to make sure that indeed 'DATA' and 'MEDIA' are plural on the GMAT exam, no exceptions. Can we confirm?

Thank you!

Here is an old thread about media that may help you: media-is-that-plural-or-singular-t3117.html

Here is an old thread about data: data-agenda-are-plural-in-gmat-t1549.html

Thank you.
I am going to be a pest: the post says that Oxford says that data and media are plural but does not say anything anything about GMAT.

Datum and medium - singular on GMAT - this is clear!

But data and media - are they singular or plural on GMAT?

Thanks!!

As the threads quoted say, media can be used as either a singular or plural noun. I would venture to say that data can also, since you could easily construct a sentence such as "The data is flawed" in which data is used as a collective noun. Media is also generally used as a collective noun. Remember, when in doubt lean singular.

The overall point is that the GMAT is not going to test you on whether data and media are singular or plural; any answer choices involving these words will have other, more substantive issues for you to deal with.
