Critical Reasoning Issues

by MariaR697 Sun Jul 13, 2014 11:35 pm

Hi,

I have been practicing Critical Reasoning questions for the past few days, but I've been struggling with it. The thing is I can do easy problems but when I try harder questions I always get it wrong. I have noticed that 95% of the times, I always get it wrong because I managed to eliminate 3 answer choices but then I get stuck between the 2 other choices and almost every time end up choosing the wrong answer. It's like I can eliminate 3 answers quickly and without any problems but then I cant decide between the other 2 and always select the wrong one (even though I had the right one as my other answer choice).

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I had a similar problem, when I could quickly eliminate 3 choices and was left with the closest 2 options. The best way (and by experience, usually proven right) is to pick the option which is tied closely to the details in the passage, and avoid the one which is more general in nature.
Hope this helps!

We await the experts' advice anyway.

Good luck to you!
Regards

There is nothing special about "the last two choices". To choose between two options, you should use the same sort of thinking as you would to choose among 3, 4, or 5 options.

In reviewing a critical reasoning problem, if you understand the problem well enough, you should realize (perhaps in retrospect) that ALL of the wrong answer choices are very, very wrong indeed. (E.g., if you need to weaken an argument, then all of the wrong answers will either be irrelevant or else strengthen the argument.)
If you haven't reached that point yet, then you probably just don't understand the problem well enough yet. If that's true, it's almost certainly a result of mistakenly trying to think about the problem in an "academic" way, rather than trying to see it as a real-life situation (imaginary dialogue, personal involvement, etc.)

In any case"”"”Without a specific problem(s) to use as a basis, this discussion isn't really going to go anywhere productive. If you have specific problems on which you have trouble choosing between two specific answer choices, then go ahead and post those on the forum (as long as they're from allowed sources, of course).
