Confusion in meaning...

by AsadA969 Sat Nov 14, 2015 3:17 pm

The acrobatic show will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until audience interest lasts.

A. will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until audience interest lasts
B. begins at 6 p.m., continuing until audience interest lasts
C. will begin at 6 p.m. and, until audience interest lasts, will continue
D. begins at 6 p.m. and, as long as audience interest lasts, it continues
E. will begin at 6 p.m. and continue as long as audience interest lasts

Hi Ron, How are you?
According to GMAT Club, the the correct answer is E. I am confused about the answer option given by GMAT Club. But, i can't accept their answer; I am with option A. I am giving an analogy which will support the choice A not E. So, could you please help me by giving your explanation?
I'll boil water until rice is cooked.
>>if rice is cooked, then i'll stop boiling.

I'll boil water as long as rice is cooked.
>> after rice is cooked, i'll STILL boil the water. Every work has objective. Here, my objective is to cook rice. If my objective is successful, why will I carry on my works?
Thanks...

As per the forum rules, we need a verifiable source for the problem before we can deal with this question. If the question is not one of ours or one that is copyright-free, we will have to delete the question.

both of these are absolutely correct—and, together, they explain perfectly why A is wrong and E is right. as long as the audience maintains interest in the show, the show will continue.

Thank you Ron for your response. Actually, I did not get it with your short message. Could you please explain it with some examples?
Thanks again...

your examples are already perfect. just use them as analogies.

the point of the sentence is that, as long as the audience's interest is ongoing ('lasts'), the performers will continue the show.

(furthermore, 'until the audience's interest lasts' is nonsense anyway, since 'xxxx lasts' does not happen at a single point in time.)

For future reference, GMATClub is not an original source of problems to my knowledge (they aggregate problems rather than write their own, right?), and saying something is "probably copyright-free" obviously doesn't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car that the dealer told you was "probably safe", would you? :)

"probably safe" also does not mean that it is 100% unsafe. It is totally depends on the result after buying the car. If it is safe after buying the car, then it is safe and if it is unsafe after buying the car then it is not safe at all, tim :)
