Confused with GMATPREP Score

by shwetachand Fri Jun 27, 2014 4:59 pm

Hello ,

I am bit confused after the second GMATPREP mock test . Despite higher number of correct answers , the overall GMAT score dropped from 740 to 710 . I am not able to figure out why this happened . Can someone please help me understand what went wrong in the second GMATPTREP test?

Details of the two tests are as below :

GMATPREP 1:

Overall score : 740

QA : 50 [ 37 Questions , 11 incorrect ]
Wrong Question numbers in QA : 3,9,15,19,20,21,22 , 23,29,31,36

Verbal : 40 [ 41 Questions , 13 incorrect ]
Wrong Question number in Verbal : 5,9,11,20,22,26,29,30,31,36,39,40,41

GMATPREP2:

Overall score : 710

QA : 50 [ 37 Questions , 7 incorrect ]
Wrong Question numbers in QA : 4,6,20,27,28,32,35

Verbal : 40 [ 41 Questions , 10 incorrect ]
Wrong Question number in Verbal : 4,9,12,19,21,29,30,31,34,38

So despite the increase in number of correct answers from 26 to 30 , the QA score remained at 50 and despite the increase in the number of correct answers from 28 to 31 , the Verbal score dropped from 40 to 37.

In nutshell, although there were 7 more correct answers in GMATPREP2 than in GMATPREP1 , my score dropped from 740 to 710 .

Since the incorrect answers were more distributed in GMATPREP2 than in GMATPREP1 , the score in GMATPREP2 should have been higher , isn't it ?

I can't understand the logic behind the two scores . It would be really helpful if someone can explain the logic behind this weird score.

Regards,
Shweta

Yes it is really weird and I can't make heads or tails of this result. So I was hoping if someone can help me to decipher the root cause .
My exam date is 19th July.

We respond to all posts in order, oldest first, and the date of your thread is based on the date of the last post in the thread, not the first. If you bump your own post (or a conversation ensues), you will wait longer for a response.

Please also note that the forums are a free service, open to the public. Because of the volume of traffic we receive, it is not unusual to wait a week from the date of the last post (sometimes longer) for a response. If you see that older posts in the same folder have not yet been answered, then you know that we haven't missed you - we just haven't gotten to your question yet.

The results you see are typical for the GMAT - a weird test, indeed. The GMAT is not scored based upon # correct - multiple different scores can have the same # of incorrect answers. The score is based on the difficulty levels of the questions that you answer correctly vs. incorrectly. You can also get a higher score with a few more wrong, etc.

In general, your performance on the two tests was about the same on Quant. Your Verbal performance likely dropped because you missed more lower-level questions than you did on the first test - so you just didn't lift your score as high.

Go back and check the questions that you missed. Did you make some careless mistakes? Did you have some holes in your foundational knowledge? Did you fall into some traps? Etc. Digging into the questions themselves will help you to learn so that you can get those kinds of questions right the next time. :)
