Comparison Question

by LouieL481 Thu Jun 04, 2015 5:23 pm

In sentence "we have three times as many pears as you", would it be more formal not to omit the helping verb after 'you' ? What is the rule of thumb when dealing w/ this kind of sentence structure?

Your help is much appreciated!!

...as you
...as you do
...as do you

all of these are fine.

would it be more formal...

you will never be made to choose between two correct answers, so there's no point in trying to rank them.

also, DO NOT try to learn to WRITE comparison sentences. that's really hard -- even most native speakers of english can't do it competently -- and it's way, way, way beyond the scope of this exam.

remember-- there are multiple-choice options! you should approach comparison problems as "beauty contests" -- i.e., as RELATIVE judgments among the choices.

Is following two constructions also acceptable?
as you have
as have you

How to differentiate between do and have in comparisons ?

Thanks

please keep in mind—this folder is, ultimately, a place for questions about specific GMAT-related items.

yes, it's called the 'general verbal folder', but the word 'general' is NOT an invitation for random, source-free questions.
rather, 'general' just means 'sources other than MPrep and GMAT Prep' (which have their own folders here).

so, it's time for this thread to be locked.

if there is a specific problem in which 'do' and 'have' are contrasted, please search the forum for that problem. if it's already here, please post in the existing thread. if it's not, please create a thread in the appropriate folder (unless the problem is from a banned source).
thanks.

...and this exam NEVER tests the first person (i/we/us) or the second person (you), so the items involving "you" are non-issues.
