compared to vs compared with

by Grumppee Fri Apr 18, 2008 6:40 pm

Im trying to master idioms in the english language. Could anyone help me understand the difference between 'compared to' and 'compared with'. I know one has to do with similiarities and the other with differences....could someone maybe list any example of compared with?

thanks in advance.

:)

I'm happy to tell you that you can forget all about this rule. How's that for good news? I could never keep it straight myself!

One of our veteran instructors has recently finished an exhaustive survey of all published OG questions and we've discovered that:
a) OG never actually tests this rule (though the rule does exist in grammar), and
b) OG uses "compared with" and "compared to" interchangeably in its explanations - that is, the OG writers don't even follow the rule in writing the various OG books!

This will be removed from the idiom list in the next version of our SC Bible - hopefully out sometime later this year.
