collective nouns

Thanks, adiagr. Yes, in general collective nouns should be treated as singular: army, group, class, gang, family, team, etc. Pay special attention to this if you learned your English in a Commonwealth country (UK, ZA, and India in particular) because this rule is the opposite of what you'll encounter in those dialects..
