Clarification required

by psondh7610 Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:47 am

I need a clarification on this particular question -

If , sqrtxy = xy what is the value of x + y?

(1) x = -1/2
(2) y is not equal to zero

Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.

Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.

Both statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER one ALONE is sufficient.

EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.

Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

The answer to the question per the test guide is C.

But i fail to understand as to why the answer A is wrong?

As per the first statement x=-1/2. Now if i input the value of x in the equation sqrtxy = xy, then i can find the value of y and hence the value of x+y. So why is the answer to the problem C?

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines before posting. This folder is only for general strategy questions, not content or specific problems.

On these forums, we answer problems only from MGMAT or GMATPrep and those problems should be posted in the relevant folder. If you are a course student, please ask about other problems or issues before or after class or during office hours.

If you are not in one of our classes, and the problem is not from MGMAT or GMATPrep, then you can ask about it on another forum (I recommend Beat the GMAT).
