Two questions from CAT 4 are confusing my knowledge of the word "that." My understanding is we should attack pronouns and "this", "that", "these", and "those" cannot stand alone as pronouns. I am only concerned with the word "that", not the other issues in the sentence.
Problem 1 makes sense to me but problem 2 is where I do not understand. I've bolded the areas I am most confused with in both statements but specifically, in question 2, why isn't a noun like "they" or "the judge" required after the word "that"? (again, disregarding the other issues)
1. Jean-Jacques Rousseau contended that man is good only when in "the state of nature" but is corrupted by society, that compels man to compare himself to others.
